Playing with Legos

July 18, 2007

I love Legos! Who doesn’t? Once I made an actual working Transformer(Starscream) out of Legos! This Summer there is a great way to show off your Lego talents and creativity while at the same time supporting a great cause, the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Mandy Matherly is organizing the 2nd Annual Lego Build-Off to be held on August 4, 2007 at The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

The way it works is simple. Each participant builds their lego creation ahead of time and brings it to the Institute on August 4th. The general public then votes, using their money, for the best Lego creation. The masterpiece that brings in the most money is declared the official champion and wins the grand prize. All the proceeds of course will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Participants must register with Mandy Matherly by phone by August 2, 2007. Rather than post her phone number for the world to see I would be happy to privately put anyone who wants to participate in contact with her.

Mandy’s inspiration to organize this event stems from her friendship with Morgan Hall, a close friend of hers who has Muscular Dystrophy. The story which she tells about her friendship with Morgan is truly inspiring.

Well I happen to be at my mother’s house tonight and I think I will stop typing now and go up in her attic to try and find my old Legos. Lets see if I still have some creativity leftover from my childhood!

PiedmontCU.org gets an update

July 11, 2007

This week our website received an update. The chalkboard and apple theme is the same as before and it keeps with the educational roots of our credit union. The NetBranch login is still in the top left area beneath the PCU logo. New features include:

  1. A simpler site navigation menu. (beneath the chalkboard & apple)
  2. RSS feeds for PCU Rates and PCU News.
  3. A Quicklinks drop-down menu for easy access to commonly needed pages.
  4. PCU Mobile. A version of the site formated for small screens like PDA’s and mobile phones. (It hasn’t been tested on phones yet, but looks good on a Palm PDA. This is a work in progress.)
  5. A NetBranch Help Page.
  6. A scrolling window showing recent PCU Member Connect headlines.
  7. Links to other community websites and school websites.
  8. A search engine that works!
  9. A better experience for users who do not have javascript enabled.

Take a look here, www.piedmontcu.org, and let us know what you think. In the future we plan to add a Kid’s area as well as a Resource & Planning Center where members can find information on a variety of topics.

The Power Went Out… Again!

July 10, 2007

Update 7-10-07 3:30pm: Power has been restored so the credit union is again open for full service.

Due to this afternoon’s storms the power is out up and down Piney Forest Road. As a result our main office is closed and our ATM is unavailable. Deposits can be made in the night drop and we’ll post them as soon as power is restored.(It could be tomorrow!) Our website, piedmontcu.org, and NetBranch(including Billpay) are still online and any electronic transactions on your account will continue without interruption. (Such as scheduled bill payments, Visa Check Card transactions, & Direct Deposits.) Telephone teller is also still available for inquiries on accounts at 1-877-768-5405.

It seems ironic that just this week we are revising our disaster plan. One of the revisions we’re considering will enable the credit union to at least run the drive-thru during an event like today’s power outage. Given that this is the third lengthly power outage in the last 11 months, I have a suspicion that we’ll be giving that some very serious consideration.
